I was elected as one of your two Salisbury District Councillors in May 1995. The ward at that time matched the Civil Parish of Laverstock and Ford, which included the proposed ‘Hampton Park’ and the small but existing Old Sarum settlement.
I was success again in May 1999, once again coming second in the poll. The ward remained the same, although Hampton Park now had lots of houses built with Sarum Ridge to follow.
In 2003, the ward boundaries had been redrawn to take into account the large building programme at Old Sarum. Hampton Park was ‘warded’ to a new Bishopdown Ward and represented by two District Councillors from the City. However, Hampton Park was and is very much still part of the Parish of Laverstock & Ford and not part of the City. Clarendon Park Parish was split from Alderbury Ward and linked to Laverstock. I topped the poll in the new ward of Laverstock, Ford, Old Sarum & Clarendon Park.
May 2007 was the latest election with the ward remaining as described in 2003. I again, was very honoured to top the poll with over 100 votes separating me from the 2nd placed candidate. This election saw the council change hands and a Labour & Liberal Democrat partnership took charge. As a result, I was selected to be the Vice Chairman in the first year of the council, knowing that I would have the honour of serving as Chairman of the Council in the final year of Salisbury District Council.
My only sadness, is that a hugely successful District Council (top 30 of several hundred District Councils) can be cast aside by a bid for Unitary Council for Wiltshire, by one of the lowest ranked County/Unitary Councils (345 out of 349). No one wanted it except Wiltshire County—and not all of them—the people were not asked. Glad to see Hazel Blears get the sack! 4 June 2009 Elected as your Unitary Councillor Wiltshire Council 652 votes Laverstock, Ford & Old Sarum Ward Turnout was 49.6% (well above Wiltshire average) My % of vote 47.6% Thank you all.
